BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here. The worst word used is a three letter word that begins with the letter a. There also are a few other mild curse words, but this is a good mystery with a lot going on. And even that cuss word only appears three times.POV: First person.WRITING & EDITING: I had difficulty swallowing the punctuation. Otherwise, the writing flow, editing, grammar and so forth were excellent. Probably I am one of those few who will even mention the punctuation. Of course, I, myself, have troubles with punctuation when I’m in a hurry, so I should just shut up.Mind you, from early on I did have issues with the story early on. What, with our heroine being in a house with no heat or power, she uses a phone to snap a photo and a laptop to email. But the difficulty in reconciling all that would not be necessary if she had simply opened the email app on her cell phone and attached the pic to that email, with no mention of a laptop at all.Still, by the end of Chapter 4 I was hooked as solid as any salmon ever caught….ADVENTURE: Yes. Maine during the Christmas holidays sounds wonderful I’ve only been there twice, but not during Christmas. But I did live in Massachusetts for a year and Autumn through Spring, the region is a dream land. This writer reminded me of that, so kudos to her.EXCERPT‘…was supposed to meet the delivery truck at four. I was running late and hoped I’d make good time and wasn’t thrilled when I found the road closed just half a mile from the side road where I’d turn off to head to the bluff.“I wonder what happened.” I said to Rufus. From the number of flashing red lights, it appeared every emergency vehicle in the area must have responded to whatever was going on. My heart sank when I realized they were turning people around. I hoped there was another road I could take to where I was going. I rolled down my window as a police officer who looked to be barely out of high school walked toward me.“I’m sorry, ma’am. The road’s closed and will be for a while yet. I’m going to need you to turn around.”“What happened?”“There’s been a murder, so local law enforcement has secured this whole area.”The fact that this young cop had just admitted to me that there’d been a murder when he could just as easily have said incident or even accident surprised me. Ben would have offered a vague reply to a stranger before he had all the facts, but perhaps they did things differently on this side of the country. “I understand you need to close the road, but I’m new here and don’t know my way around. I just moved to the house on the bluff. Is there another road I can take there?”“There’s a back road you can take to your place. You’ll come in from the south end of the bluff. It’ll take you a bit longer and the roads aren’t in the best shape, but it’ll get you home.”“That’d be great,” I said.“Just do a U-turn here, then take the first right about a half mile back. Head down that road until you come to the second right. After you make that turn, go another five miles or so. I know that seems like a lot; the road loops around and takes you south before you head back north. Eventually, you’ll see a big red barn. You can’t miss it. Take a left at the barn. The road isn’t maintained and will be bumpy, but it’ll get you where you’re going. Just follow that road until you get to a service road, then stay right at the fork. The fork to the left goes out to the Peyton place, but the right-hand fork will take you right to your place.”“Thank you. I appreciate the directions.” I turned the wheel hard to the left to execute the U-turn. “He did say to take the first right?” I asked the cat, suddenly hoping I wouldn’t end up lost in the dense forest that claimed most of the land not belonging to the town.“Meow.”“Yeah, that’s what I remember as well. Hang on. It sounds like it’s going to get bumpy.”There were a few tense moments along the way as I tried to pick my way along roads that hadn’t been plowed by the county yet were passable with four-wheel drive, but eventually, Rufus and I made it home. There was no way the…’Daley, Kathi. The Inn at Holiday Bay: Boxes in the Basement (Kindle Locations 647-676). Kathi Daley Books. This is the first in a new series for Kathi Daley, author of several other fun mystery series, including Zoe Donovan Cozy Mystery, Whales and Tails Cozy Mystery, and Tess and Tilly Mystery, just to name a few. The main character, Abby Sullivan, is looking to get back among the living, after the tragic loss of her husband and infant son one year ago. In doing this, she has moved from California to a small town of Holiday Bay in Maine, and purchased, sight unseen, a large house that she is hoping to renovate to a bed and breakfast inn. She soon finds herself the proud owner of a stray cat named Rufus, and hires herself a contractor, highly recommended by the local hardware store owner. As her plans start to become more concrete, she learns about friendships engendered in small towns. She even takes in a border, Georgia and her dog, with the intention of hiring her to be the inn's live-in manager, since it seems that Georgia's life had a similar destruct button and is looking for that second start. But all is not so rosy in this town, as a recent murder reveals. And when Abby discovers 4 boxes in her basement that seem to have a connection to not only this murdered girl, but at least two others that have either died or disappeared, she decides to see if she can learn what may connect them. This was a good start to a new series, quickly developing the main characters and setting, and providing a sense of the town and townspeople. The writing started out a little stilted, but once the story got under way, it flowed nicely. My one complaint is that it did not resolve all of the issues in this story, but left some "strings" for future books. But having said that, I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series.

I love this new series already, after reading this first book. The main character, Abby is very likable and so are the people in the small Maine town she has moved to to get away from painful memories of the loss of her family. Her late husband was a police detective, and they used to discuss his cases together, so when a local woman ends up murdered, Abby just can't let it go without trying to figure it all out, especially when her new house seems to be involved in a big way.Great story, great characters and just a really great read. I can't wait for the next one in this new series.Highly recommended!
