This is a gorgeous book, not only because it contains Maria Merian's butterfly and plant illustrations but also because it is a visual treat with the additional sidebars, maps, photos and endpages! Sidman also enhances the chapters with her poetry. This was a fascinating topic - I learned so much about Merian and the cycle of a caterpillars. It deserved the Sibert Medal.
I found myself cheering for Maria as she threw off the confines of her gender and time to bring beautiful and important work to science.

Very inspiring for young girls

A biography of artist and self-made naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, a woman way ahead of her time.This is a decently written biography of Maria Sibylla Merian. If you've never read about this lady who recorded some of the first accurate life cycles of butterflies and moths, as well as frogs, in a time when spontaneous generation was the prevailing scientific theory and women weren't deemed able to do science. She's a fascinating woman. This book is put together in a way very pleasing to the eyes. I read another biography of this amazing woman earlier this year by Sarah B. Pomeroy which I thought was a little bit better. Mostly, I did not like how Sidman instead of just explaining how things were back in Merian's time made judgmental backhanded comments about the time. One of those things that really rubbed me wrong was when she essentially said you've got to excuse Maria for believing in God and mentioning God in her scientific observations because everyone back then believed in God. I think the author should've just stuck to the facts and left her personal opinions about belief in God out of it. Sidman did do a good job of conveying what life was like for a woman in the 17th century and how Maria was so atypical and ahead of her time. So overall a decent and beautiful biography.Notes on content: Some old wood prints of South American slaves and natives show them scantily clad. The process of preserving animals is mentioned.
When I first glanced at this book, I figured it would be a typical children's book full of lots of pictures and a few words about a unique woman artist. What I got instead was a surprisingly in-depth offering that not only taught my daughter (and myself!) a great deal about a woman that most would consider one of the worlds first ecologists, but did so in a surprisingly thorough way.At just under 100 pages, this is definitely not a book for a super young reader. There are a lot of words, and a lot of bigger words, with plenty of historical context into social and religious issues of the day that were major driving forces in the life of both Maria Merian and women in general (with small inset sections that go into deeper depth when necessary). This is basically what you'd get if you took one page of "Goodnight Story for Rebel Girls" (or a similar book that goes through a long list of accomplished women) and expanded it into a full length book with a surprising amount of detail.Having said all of the above, my six year old (who is into both art and science) loved it, and I learned plenty from it as well. Well done.
