About the Author
Michael Denton holds an MD from Bristol University and a PhD in Biochemistry from King's College in London. Formerly a Senior Research Fellow in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Otago in New Zealand, he is currently a Senior Fellow with the Center for Science and Culture at Discovery Institute. His previous books include The Wonder of Water, Fire-Maker, Evolution: Still a Theory in Crisis, Nature's Destiny, and Evolution: A Theory in Crisis. His scientific articles have appeared in science journals such as Nature and Human Genetics.

Book reviewChildren of lightThis is a remarkable book. I have read few books that really change the way to see the world. This is one of the best. An example of a bright enquiring mind probing evidence from all the sciences to reach his conclusion.I liked the fact that Denton looks at the raw facts first, versus rhetoric first, facts second. Denton shows his anthropocentric view of Nature is not contrived but clear and logical. Facts are facts and Denton’s view is built on steely factual foundations. Denton is building on the familiar fine tuning argument in physics known from books like the “The Privileged Planet†by Gonzalez or “Cosmic Coincidences†by Martin Rees that show similar mind bending odds against benevolent conditions for energy and matter to exist. But in this book, Denton moves closer to us, as humankind and explores how light is also surprisingly fine-tuned to enable us, sentient beings to exist. Examples of his evidence are accessible to most with a high school science background.1. The wavelength of emitted by our sun is a very thin slither across a huge possible range. This happens to be perfect for carbon chemistries to use it for example for our vision.2. This light is also just right for photosynthesis, again very specifically tailored for plant photochemistry. One of the three basic books by Michael Denton, the other two being The Wonder of Water and Fire Maker. These three books taken together comprise a good basic knowledge of basic science over several disciplines.
Very thought provoking. Hope more people will consider the existence of mind (other than mere human mind) in the universe and beyond.
Denton's newest book is well researched and written. As another reviewer mentioned, you'll need a bit of high school physics and biology to track with Denton as he builds a case for the incredible fitness he sees in the type of light we receive from the Sun and the type of light that organisms such as humans use for all sorts of things, from vision to allowing for plants to produce their own food, from which we ultimately gain our sustenance. What's remarkable about this book is Denton's careful explanations along the way of the processes involved that appear more than just by chance.

Lewis said “[N]ature gives most of her evidence in answer to the questions we ask her…and a good cross-examiner can do wonders.†Denton’s line of questioning is aimed at light.The question Denton asks is: “Light, are your characteristics, your origins, and how you interact with your environment what we would expect from blind chance, or are there a huge number of unlikely ‘coincidences’ that make you uniquely suited for supporting advanced life.â€You will need to have retained a little of your high school physics and chemistry to understand and/or enjoy this book.
The basic ID argument is that not everything evident in nature is merely accidental. In this book Denton focuses on that very, very small part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible light, which nonetheless bears a passel of properties that (among other things) enable photosynthesis and support visual acuity in humans. Those wishing to make lucid additions to their arsenal of ID-favoring arguments will want to add this book to their libraries. Those opposed to ID may find Denton's anthropocentric thesis off-putting, but they owe it to themselves to allow their scientific imaginations to roam across a landscape of facts about light and life where Denton serves as a very capable guide.
