I read these stories before going to sleep every night. About six a night. They are so inspiring. They cause me to cry at times. I usually sing the hymns along with reading the stories because I want to understand where the writer was coming from when they wrote it. I don't know all the hymns of course but I sure do know a lot. I was surprised at how many but I have been a Christian for many years so it stands to reason. If I don't know the tune I try to follow the notes as best as I can to get the tune or just read through the words. This book has hymns from so long ago I don't know most of them but the stories are so necessary for us to understand our wonderful legacy as Christians and they are so interesting. Robert Morgan is to be thanked for bringing them to us.
This book was exactly what I expected! The hymns are printed on the left-hand page with the song's origin on the right. The quality is great as well - it has a silky cover with the bookmarking flaps. My husband and I purchased it as a Mother's Day gift for his mom and I almost didn't want to give it up...
This book "Then Sings My Soul" is so good to spend some quiet time with. The book contains some of the best songs ever written. Along with really good songs (words and notes,) the book is also filled with the stories behind the songs. Wonderful book to read and have in my personal library.
I am so impressed! Robert J. Morgan cares so much for humanity that he, his wife, and staff, have compiled now three books of hymns and the stories of how they originated. Written in a conversational style, filled with marvelous and thrilling stories, the author has provided more music information to strengthen faith. Just reading the introduction will keep you wanting to learn more!Book 3 is just full of riveting stories - examining hymns past and present (they continue to be written of course!) Some hymns are familiar, all of them are impressive. Among my favorite hymns and stories is "In Christ Alone" written in 2001. Another very amazing story concerns Horatio G. Spafford and his family (It Is Well With My Soul") Be surprised! Well, actually, there are surprises on every page it seems!It doesn't matter if you can't sing or follow notes - reading the inspired words and the why and how writers and composers got their message across thru the ages is well worth your time. I both love and appreciate this book and tho I do not know the Morgans personally, they are kindred spirits - "Blest Be The Tie That Binds Our Hearts In Christian Love....."
Robert Morgan's three books - this is the final one - on traditional Christian hymns are all excellent. In addition to providing the words and music for the hymns, the stories of the hymnwriters and their inspiration for writing each hymn is also provided. If you're interested in traditional hymns, you won't find better source material than these three books. Highly recommended.
These books are wonderful and I have all 3 of them. It gives me even more inspiration when I hear or sing these songs to know the stories behind how they came into existance. He does a terrific job giving us historial info on the writers of the best hymns ever.
Actually, do not have this one but have the other to books previous to this one. Can hardly wait to get this one. Song leader in church.... I use these to read stories before the congregation sings the hymn. People love this.... makes the hymns more meaningful.
