Review
"John Carlin has written a crucial book- for practitioners and laymen alike-about the evolution, impacts, and implications of the abuses we've all witnessed, and many have personally experienced, in the cyber domain. Cyber is yet another example of the dual-edged nature of technology: huge benefit to mankind on one hand, and the potential for great harm on the other. And, unique to this book, is the historical description of how we have tried to respond to the harmful activities that occur all too frequently in the cyber domain. An interesting read, with vivid detail. John represents a superb amalgam of legal insight and great writing skill. A must read in my view."―James Clapper, New York Times bestselling author and former Director of National Intelligence"This book is thrilling, important, and deeply fascinating. Cybersecurity is key to modern life: an imperative for us as a nation and each of us personally. It's about protecting our personal data, our businesses, and our democracy. John Carlin has been on the front lines, defending us against attacks from China, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and criminal gangs. The riveting stories of these secret battles for our digital safety teach us much about what America can-and must-do to protect itself."―Walter Isaacson, New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo Da Vinci"By turns electrifying, illuminating, inspirational, and difficult to put down, [Dawn of the Code War] describes how 'criminals, terrorists, and spies' have used the Internet for their gain, and how the U.S. government along with international allies, has assessed and addressed these threats... Similar in energy to Carl Bernstein's All the Presidents Men, it informs of current cyberthreats while offering stirring success stories and cautions about the future of the code war... A deeply intriguing look into cybersecurity threats facing the United States that will fascinate anyone interested in technology and/or political intrigue." ―Library Journal"Given the threats Carlin enumerates, including election hacking and the theft of intelligence files, responses "created and refined in real-time" are increasingly necessary-but not forthcoming. Given the lack of developed policy, if you're alarmed by the thought of Russian election tampering in 2016, you're likely to be even more so come the midterms-and by this dire book."―Kirkus Reviews

This is an important book about the current and future cyber threat that the American public, if not the global public, should know about. Carlin describes in detail the US government's efforts to deter cyberattacks through criminal prosecution. His insight on the process within DoJ that led to the prosecution of PLA hackers is especially fascinating. This book had my blood boiling, and I hope it will help make our society more aware of its increasing cyber risk.
This is a terrific book--a riveting account of a new frontier in warfare. Required reading for our current age, and an engrossing tale.
Get this book if you want a modern history of cyber warfare
Although most of us are aware of cyber crime, a read like this book brings home the extent of this â€movementâ€, and the risks all of us run on a daily basis. Because we are connected, we are vulnerable. Carlin describes on a good level a development of cyber attacks, and the reaction from industry and government agencies. This is a good inspirational read for my to-do list for this and the coming years.
Amazed and terrified. The entire cyber-security problem has scared me into being more aware of my very indifferent attitude to the problem until now. This book has piqued my interest and will force me to be much more aware of the problem and make me more vigilant. Thanks
inspired me to read book about George Washington that was mentioned in content.
Frightening.
Do you bank online?Do you use social media?Do you have a smartphone? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are vulnerable to cyber attack.  As much as we depend on technology in our lives, it's important to think about the implications of these choices we are making as individuals, as citizens of nations. Many further questions arise as we start to ponder the subject more: What precautions do we take to protect ourselves? Who is in charge of protecting the institutions we trust our information with? How do entities such as corporations and government protect themselves, especially when they themselves are made up of tech-dependent individuals? Former Assistant Attorney General, and Chief of Staff and Head Council for Robert Mueller, John P. Carlin uses his extensive experience to write a riveting book about the international cyber war the United States is waging every day.Carlin uses the organization of a good prosecutor to step-by-step explain the origins of the hacker. From the pranksters to the rebels to the thieves to the terrorists, the evolution of the crimes is outlined for the reader. What began as a personal challenge for the teen in the early 80s has become state-sponsored missions to steal military and corporate secrets. After a fantastic overview in the first chapter, he focuses on some key cases that have shaped the war over the last ten years. He details the reasons why Russia, Korea, Iran, and China pose the biggest threats to our businesses, infrastructure, and military secrets, and uses cases such as the attacks on Sony, The Sands Casino, and the 2016 elections as evidence.I particularly enjoyed the personal sections Carlin included about his experience working in the Hoover building. Yet, at times I wanted more of this type of writing, and less of the fact-for-fact details. This is my preference and I’m sure others will see the strength of all the particulars of the cases.Overall, Dawn of the Code War is an honest, clear-eyed description of the issues of cybersecurity in our nation and our world. With tech continually ruling our every day lives, Carlin gives us some essential questions to think about. He references several times how amazing it is that so many fictional plots have now become reality. This book is great for true crime fans looking to educate themselves on the current state of our war in cyberspace, a war that has no boundaries.
