Great Book. Very thorough and informative. A survey of the various Hispanic-American communities. Delves into U.S foreign policy in Central and Latin America and how that relates to immigration from Central and Latin America to the United States. The Hispanic-American influence on politics. Explains the uniqueness of each community from Puerto Rican communities, Mexican Communities, Dominican Communities, Cuban Communities, etc. Various phases of the Hispanic-American experience from the colonial era to the present.

The book’s references to history outside the Western Hemisphere demonstrate at best a minimal understanding of European and Asian history. In addition, the book claims to acknowledge the vast differences between indigenous societies, but also engages in gross over generalizations about them. The economic data given in the book about free trade is misleading and fails to acknowledge the reasons some Latin Americans continue to support neoliberal economic policy. Finally, while I understand that the book has a political agenda and does not make any attempt to appear impartial to its reader, I feel it does not adequately support its ideas or refute those of its detractors.

The book came in good condition no rips and any other damage. Now for the content: if you want to learn about part of the history of the latino countries and the involvement the U.S had (has) with this countries this is the book. It's explores alot about Puerto Rico,Mexico, Dominic Republic,Honduras, and more. As the author is Puerto Rican himself he shows his family experience and his thoughts on a conflict no yet spoken about but seen in todays atmosphere about Puerto Rico dependency, on the U.S. and how seeking a less dependency between each other is what (some) puerto ricans want. The political views the United States tried or accomplish in this countries and the effects it had economically and politically in them.

Very good read. A little biased but it also has some personal experiences mixed in there and history of the US that wasn't taught in public school. Got this book for my Survey of Hispanic Culture class and I have no regrets because it has been really interesting. This book was read with The Latino Reader, which also gave more in depth information on some of the situations with the history of Latinos.

This is a very readable, engaging social history of crucial points connecting Latin America to the United States. Perfect for an undergraduate introduction to Latinos in the United States. The volume of information covered in this very readable book is impressive. Where Acuña's "Occupied America" tells a powerful, but dreadfully long-winded story only of Chicano history, Gonzalez paints a much broader and more encompassing picture, covering an array of Latino Histories that Make American History. In particular, while Gonzalez covers the key junctures of each history he also weaves into each chapter personal accounts from interviews he has conducted over the years, even weaving in his own Puerto Rican family history. This brings a human touch to the book that few other such books do. Gonzalez is unapologetic in his account of the travesties of Anglo abuse of Latin America, but in a way that none of my Anglo students has found unreasonable. Criticisms? The book does far more good than harm; that said, my only criticism is that the expanse of what he covers is so much, more is required to fill the gaps. However, I do believe this book is an excellent source of motivation to do just that.

An excellent book, great job by Juan Gonzalez. This is a great book to learn about Latino/as and the history of the U.S foreign policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. I think is a must-have for anybody looking to learn about Latinos and the immigration to the U.S.

It has given me so much more. This book gives me a better perspective of the why and the who is responsible for the migration of latinos to the US territory. I keep wanting more, tell me more. I believe a whole encyclopaedia can be written on this matter. This book should be use in schools today to void the racist happening now a days. Thanks to the author for teaching me so much.

Harvest of Empire is impressive in both breadth and depth (with breadth generally taking priority), quite readable (often engaging and lively, only sometimes bogging down in historical details at the expense of the larger narrative), and immensely informative.Gonzales shows how Latin America and the US have been deeply connected for centuries, how Latinas/os have a long and integral history of participating in and contributing to US culture, and how Latino/a immigration to the US can be directly connected to US military and economic involvement/intervention in Latin America. In all of this, he documents and critiques the prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination Latinas/os have faced within the US. In the short epilogue, he also lays out a concrete vision for a just, multicultural future for the country.I finished this book with a strong sense of gratitude to Gonzalez for having written it.
